I love that the first picture in your post is of a bathroom!

Karl's step dad sometimes takes pictures of the food he's eating at home. I have to admit it was a little unnerving the first time he dished up his meal and then whipped out the Nikon D-300 to shoot his plate of salad and Rice-A-Roni. He said, "It's so pretty. Look at the colors. It's like a painting". I think I'm going to try that and see what happens.

Thanks for sharing, Matt! And, in response to your question, the locals do stare at me while I take photos of my food and the restaurant. In those moments, it helps for me to imagine I am a far more important food writer than I am. I never enter a restaurant alone without concocting my backstory (the new Ruth Reichl, social media cum food expert for the Oregonian, all-star Yelper, foreign dignitary with a penchant for fried local faire). Not that I am ever asked. But, when I conduct myself like a tourist and a freak, I feel a little better thinking I am someone else. That probably says more about me as a traveler than I care to reveal.

NO! I'm still picking my jaw off the floor, while reaching for some tissues. That made me cry. I'm so sorry! And now the daunting task of finding decent fried oysters in the greater bay area...

Thanks, Ted!

You've certainly had some interesting experiences across the West. I will check out the Trailhead Cafe and would love to hear any other suggestions!

You should go! I am not quite clear what was happening with the middle mermaid. I think she may have grey hair and some excess back flesh. It appeared the artist was trying to convey something "grandmotherly" about her. But, I gotta say I'm not so sure it translated.
